What Are YOU Interested in Helping With?


Food Transportation Team

We need volunteers to pick up food donations at grocery stores and local businesses during the holidays and on a regular basis. If you are not able to commit to helping on a weekly basis, please consider signing up for another position.

Commitment
  • 2-3 hours one weekday morning each week on an ongoing basis or at least for a semester
Qualifications:
  • 18+ years of age with a valid CA Driver's License
  • Volunteers will need to have their own truck, van, or SUV or be approved to drive the Foodbank's trucks

Sort/Package Food at our Warehouse (Weekly Commitment)
There's a lot of ways you can help at our warehouse, but please keep in mind that our warehouse is open M-F from 7:00am - 3:30pm, so if you are not available during those times, please consider signing up for another position:
  • Package up food for our nonprofit partners to pick up. Commitment: one day per week ongoing or at least for a semester (M-F) from 8:00am - 12:30pm.
  • Clean or help with regular maintenance. This schedule can be much more flexible.
  • Volunteer/Project Manager. Commitment: every Wed or Fri from 1:00 – 3:00pm

Sort/Package Food at our Warehouse (Daily Drop-In)
We will soon be able to provide daily drop-in volunteer opportunities to sort food every Wed and Fri from 1:00 – 3:00pm.

Package & Distribute Food to Seniors (Brown Bag Program)
   
The Foodbank's Brown Bag Programs for Seniors serve almost 1,200 very low-income elderly people who struggle to pay for housing, health care, and basic needs on fixed incomes.
Commitment: 2 days per month, ongoing (or for at least a semester). The distribution occurs on the 2nd and 4th weeks of every month from 7:00-10:00am. Your assigned days will depend on the distribution site you are assigned to.

Volunteer Positions at Each Site:
  • Package food to prepare for distribution (must be able to lift 25 pounds)
  • Help unload the truck (must be able to lift 50 pounds)
  • Volunteer Paperwork Coordinator (ensure all volunteers have completed our application and log their hours)
  • Site Leader (serve as the Foodbank's representative at a distribution site)

Harvest Produce (Back Yard Bounty Program)

Backyard Bounty is a program of the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County that connects farmers and backyard growers with volunteers to glean fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste.
Volunteer Positions:
  • BackYard Bounty Hunter - lead teams of Back Yard Bounty volunteers
  • Back Yard Bounty Volunteer - receive e-mails when we need volunteers to harvest produce

Nutrition/Culinary Educators for After School Programs
     
The Foodbank needs nutrition and/or culinary educators and assistants for our after school programs. If you are not available from 3:30-5:30pm on weekdays, please consider signing up for another position.
Each month our Kid’s Farmers Market Program provides fresh produce and nutrition education to children from low-income families at 27 afterschool programs countywide.
Our Teens Love Cooking Program teaches real cooking skills over 7 sessions run by volunteer chefs and cooks, culminating in a party where the students cook a meal for their parents.
Commitment:
  • Kid's Farmers Market: one afternoon per month for 9 months (typically from 3:30-5:30pm)
  • Teens Love Cooking: one afternoon per week for 7 weeks (typically from 3:30-5:30pm)
Qualifications:
  • Adults who love working with kids and making learning FUN
  • Ability to commit for the duration of the program
  • Reliable transportation to get to the site (local school)
  • Willing to become food safe certified
  • Willing to take a background check
  • Bilingual is preferred, but not required

Nutrition & Food Insecurity Issues Internship/Task Force
     
The Foodbank is offering lots of ways to get involved on the ground level and work directly with the people we serve and the people who make decisions about those we serve.
Our internships/task forces include:

  • Food Literacy
  • Public Health
  • Bridges out of Poverty
  • Food Action Plan
  • Environmental Science

Join our Public Relations Team
     
The Foodbank needs help educating the community about what we do and establishing and maintaining relationships with donors and volunteers.
A few of the ways you can help are as follows:
  • Keeping in touch with volunteers and donors on a regular basis
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with local businesses, schools, and churches
  • Giving presentations about the Foodbank at local businesses, schools, and churches
  • Giving warehouse or program site tours/field trips
  • Being a docent/Foodbank advocate
  • Fundraising
  • Community outreach
  • Customer service
  • Lead volunteers to manage teams of Public Relations volunteers so we can cover more ground

Join our Storyteller Team (Interviewing/Journalism/Photography/Videography)
   
The Foodbank needs teams of interviewers/journalists, photographers, and videographers to visit our program sites and ask our volunteers and recipients how the Foodbank has made an impact in their lives.
Most of these interviews will take place on weekday afternoons (3:30 - 5:30pm).
Bilingual is preferred, but not required.
We will provide training on the questions to ask.

Events
The Foodbank has a variety of events throughout the year and we need volunteers to help us manage them all.
Volunteer Positions:
  • Set up/take down - need strong, quick volunteers to handle tables, chairs, umbrellas, etc.
  • Man our booth - need outgoing volunteers who are not afraid to talk to strangers about what we do and ask for donations (training is available)
  • Event planners - help us plan an event (it would be nice to have the same volunteers each year)
  • Event committee members - join a committee to help secure sponsorships, food donations, donations for silent auctions, etc. (it would be nice to have the same volunteers each year)

The Foodbank needs a lot of help with administrative/data entry/online research tasks. Most tasks can be done from home (as we don't have a dedicated space in our office to set up a work station). We have short and long term positions.

We have recently transitioned to SalesForce and are in need of SalesForce Administrators/Programmers to help us customize our database and utilize the Volunteers for SalesForce App. You can work remotely.
